Originally called the 'Milano-Torino' after its two key Italian ingredients, the drink was rechristened the Americano in the late 19th century to honor the American tourists who ordered it in droves at Milanese cafés. Campari's bitter citrus edge meets the herbaceous sweetness of vermouth, with a splash of soda lifting the whole combination into something bright and refreshingly low in alcohol.
