Harry McElhone published this recipe in 1927, attributing it to American expatriate and Prohibition exile Erskine Gwynne, who named it after his Paris-based literary magazine. Swapping gin for bourbon in the Negroni template shifts the entire character of the drink — the whiskey's caramel and vanilla warmth softens Campari's bitterness while deepening the sweet vermouth's dried fruit and herbal complexity into something richer and more brooding.
