Often called the missing link between the Manhattan and the Martini, the Martinez is a lush, spirit-forward sipper of gin and sweet vermouth, sweetened with a whisper of maraschino and lifted by orange bitters. Its origins are disputed — credited variously to Jerry Thomas at San Francisco's Occidental Hotel and to a nameless bartender in the town of Martinez, California — with its first known print appearance in Thomas's 1887 guide. Stirred and served up with an expressed lemon twist, it drinks richer and more aromatic than its drier descendant.
