Trader Vic Bergeron created the Mai Tai in 1944 in Oakland, California, crafting it as a showcase for a particularly fine Jamaican rum rather than as an exercise in tropical excess. The interplay of curaçao's bitter orange peel, the nutty sweetness of orgeat, and the funk of aged rum produces a drink of genuine depth within the tiki tradition.
