Jack Rose

The Jack Rose is a pre-Prohibition American sour built on applejack — apple brandy — laced with grenadine and brightened by lime, its rosy blush giving the drink half its name. It bloomed in the bars of New York and New Jersey in the early 1900s, with competing legends crediting a bartender named Frank J. May, a Newark restaurateur, and the simple marriage of applejack and grenadine. Hemingway's Jake Barnes drinks one in The Sun Also Rises, sealing its place in the canon.
