Despite the name, Jerry Thomas created this drink to honor a Japanese diplomatic delegation visiting New York in 1860 — Cognac stirred with almond-sweet orgeat and Angostura bitters produces something rich, nutty, and surprisingly elegant. One of the oldest named cocktails in American bar history.
