Phil Ward's 2007 creation at Death & Co became the cocktail that put mezcal on the modern bar map — a split base of tequila and smoky mezcal stirred with agave nectar and a double-bitters combination. Richly smoky, earthily sweet, and deeply complex.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 ozMezcal
  • 0.5 ozTequila Reposado
  • 1 tspAgave Nectar
  • 2 dashAngostura Bitters
  • 1 dashMole Bitters

Preparation

stirred · rocks glass · large cube

    add

    Combine mezcal, tequila reposado, agave nectar, and both bitters in a mixing glass.

    stir

    Add ice and stir for 25–30 seconds until well chilled.

  3. 3.

    strain

    Strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Express an orange twist over the top.
