Oaxaca Old Fashioned

A mezcal-and-tequila reinvention of the Old Fashioned, swapping whiskey for the smoke and earth of agave. Reposado tequila carries the body while a measure of mezcal lends its campfire edge, sweetened just barely with agave nectar and rounded by a couple dashes of aromatic bitters. Created in 2007 by bartender Phil Ward at New York's Death & Co, it became one of the most imitated cocktails of the modern era and helped introduce a generation of drinkers to mezcal. A flamed orange twist finishes it with caramelized citrus oils.
