A bright green, low-proof sour built on sweet melon liqueur, with vodka stretching it out while lemon and lime cut through the candy sweetness. A splash of soda over ice lifts it into something light, fizzy and easy, with a ripe honeydew aroma and a clean citrus snap at the finish.

Suntory introduced Midori in Japan in 1964 and brought the vivid melon liqueur to the United States in 1978. No bartender or bar is credited with the Midori Sour — it is the familiar liqueur-plus-citrus sour pattern applied to a new bottle, and it caught on as late-1970s nightclubs of the Studio 54 era took to the liqueur. Its popularity rolled on through the 1980s club scene, and the drink has stayed a vivid, crowd-pleasing order ever since.
