A brandy cousin of the Manhattan, the Harvard pairs equal measures of cognac-style brandy and sweet vermouth with a whisper of syrup and a brisk hit of Angostura, then lengthens the lot with seltzer. First printed in George Kappeler's 1895 Modern American Drinks and echoed through the collegiate-cocktail era, it drinks softer and brighter than its stirred relatives — rich and herbal up front, the soda finish lifting it into something almost refreshing.
