Corpse Reviver #1

The elder, mellower sibling of the better-known No. 2, the Corpse Reviver #1 is an all-brandy restorative: cognac deepened with the orchard bite of Calvados and rounded by Italian sweet vermouth. Harry Craddock enshrined it in the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, prescribing it "before 11 a.m., or whenever steam and energy are needed" — a morning-after tonic for a name that had meant a revivifying dram since the 1860s. Spirit-forward and softly autumnal, it drinks like a warmed Manhattan that wandered into an apple orchard.
