Barbary Coast

A Prohibition-era cream cocktail that splits its base between gin and Scotch, then rounds the edges with chocolatey white crème de cacao and fresh cream. The result is silky and dessert-like, the Scotch's faint smoke peeking through the cocoa. First documented in Judge Jr.'s 1927 "Here's How" — where it was joked to have been invented "to get people used to earthquakes" — it takes its name from San Francisco's old red-light district.
