A bracing colonial long drink of whiskey lengthened with hard cider over ice — orchard sweetness cut by the grain spirit's backbone. Tavern-simple and centuries old, it is woven into American Revolutionary lore: legend has it Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys fortified themselves with Stone Fences before storming Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. Nineteenth-century bar guides standardized it as whiskey and cider, though its colonial roots ran on rum and applejack.
